Two films

One for kids, one for adults.

In a truly shocking development, my wife and I managed to see *two* movies in a single weekend. This triples the number we've managed to see so far this years. One was thanks to the local gym's "date night". The other was one we were comfortable taking the FoML.

First, the movie we saw second: The adult movie. WALL-E was pretty damn good. Sure, it is rated G, and sure it is a cartoon, but this really is a movie for adults. I remember when Disney hit on the formula of "movie for the kids with some stuff to keep the adults entertained" thing in the eighties. Pixar seems to have moved past this to "movie for adults with some stuff to keep the kids entertained". The core of the movie is satire that goes way over the head of most kids. (The FoML was firing off a litany of questions afterwards. He doesn't quite understand the concept of "Science Fiction" and assumes that any story, real or not, is something that was supposed to have happened in the past.)

The kids movie was the one the night before. Iron Man is an average, by the numbers superhero flick that is nearly singlehandedly raised to "good" status by Robert Downey Jr. It flirts with social consciousness, but pulls quickly back before touching controversial territory. (As opposed to WALL-E, which in some ways seems to be criticizing the very entities that produced it.)

Oh, and Jeff Bridges looks freaky bald.

We've always been very clear with the boys that (most) stuff on TV / computer games / books is "just a story, not real", and they seem to understand that distinction quite well.

It wasn't fiction, but science fiction that was confusing him. He hasn't really gotten the notion is that this pretend stuff is supposed to happen *after* we exist.

I've read enough SF by writers still living that now seems quaint. I'm in awe that RAH seemed to point (in 1980) out that there would be something "bigger than cars" exists right now (and makes a backhand guess that it is "the computer chip"). He then pointed out that the much bigger problem was the "librarian problem" and that computer types were working on that issue. I wonder how early he would have bought Google stock?

Are already bigger than 1980s cars. You could practically fit a 1980s VW Passat in the boot of the current model.
